Psychotherapy in Brighton & Hove
About Me:
My name is Esme (she/her), and I’m a Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and I help adults and young adults (16+) with a wide range of concerns. Therapy with me focuses on helping you make sense of your inner world, including patterns in thoughts, feelings and relationships that may have developed over time. Often these patterns operate outside of conscious awareness and can leave us feeling stuck or repeating the same difficulties.
My style is warm, professional and non-judgmental as well as active and collaborative. I aim to sensitively and appropriately challenge my clients in an empathetic way to provide new insights and perspectives. I have experience working with many issues. Some areas I regularly work with include: depression, anxiety, family issues, trauma, bereavement, ADHD, ASC, relationship issues, dating, addictions, eating disorders, perfectionism, procrastination, rejection sensitivity, setting boundaries, self-esteem issues and working with people wanting to explore their identity, sexuality or gender - But this list is just a number of examples of the wide array of areas I regularly deal with in my work.
I am open, friendly and my practice is supportive of different cultural backgrounds ethnicities and is LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent affirming.
I’m an experienced and qualified therapist and have worked extensively since 2017 in both private practice and organisational settings. Alongside my private practice, I work as a Senior Therapist at a well-established therapy clinic in Brighton & Hove, and I also have experience within public and voluntary sector mental health services, including roles at a Local Authority and Mind in Brighton & Hove.
I’m accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), meeting their higher standards as a competent, ethical and independent practitioner. I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Distinction) and undertake regular continuing professional development to ensure my work remains informed by best practice, as well as regular supervision.
I offer both in-person sessions in Brighton & Hove and online therapy. Finding the right therapist matters, and you are welcome to get in touch if you would like to ask questions or explore whether working together might feel right for you.
How I Work:
Beginning therapy can feel like a significant step. You may be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, uncertain about yourself or your relationships, or simply aware that something doesn’t feel quite right. You don’t need to have clear answers before starting — therapy can be a place to explore these experiences at your own pace, within a safe and supportive space.
My core way of working is psychodynamic, which means I am interested in understanding how your past experiences, relationships and emotional world may be influencing how you feel and relate in the present. We explore thoughts, feelings and patterns together, with curiosity rather than judgement. Through collaboration and at a pace set by you; we work together to increase self-understanding, emotional awareness and the possibility for change. My style is warm, professional and non-judgmental as well as active and collaborative. I aim to sensitively and appropriately challenge my clients in an empathetic way to provide new insights and perspectives.
Alongside my core psychodynamic background I have also trained to offer CBT (with heart!). Clients may come for CBT only, or I can offer this alongside Psychotherapy as tool to support the work of recovering, acceptance and change.
Throughout my career I have worked with a wide range of clients. Over time I have developed particular experience working with neurodivergent clients as well as those from the LGBTQ+ community. I have also worked significantly with young adults (16+).
Time and again the therapeutic relationship is consistently identified as one of the most important factors in therapy outcomes and therefor the therapeutic relationship itself is central to the therapy I offer. This incorporates a consistent, reliable and confidential space where you can speak freely and feel supported in exploring whatever feels important to you.
What to Expect from Therapy
In the early sessions, we will begin by getting to know one another and exploring what has led you to seek therapy at this time. You may have clear goals or just know that you need support — both are welcome.
There is no expectation to talk about anything before you feel ready. Therapy unfolds over time, and part of the process is noticing patterns, feelings and thoughts as they emerge, both within and outside of sessions. Together, we reflect on these experiences to support greater understanding and emotional resilience.
Sessions take place at a regular, agreed time and last 50 minutes. I offer both in-person and online sessions, and we will discuss practical arrangements, boundaries and confidentiality at the outset.
Am I the Right Therapist for you?
Psychodynamic therapy may be helpful if you are interested in developing a deeper understanding of yourself, your emotions and your relationships, and are open to reflection and exploration. It can be particularly supportive if you find yourself feeling stuck, repeating patterns, or struggling to understand why certain experiences feel especially difficult.
CBT therapy (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), can be helpful in providing practical tools to help break thoughts/feelings/behaviours that feel stuck.
Finding the right therapist is an important part of the process. I welcome any questions you may have and encourage you to get in touch if you would like to explore whether this way of working feels right for you.
Accessibility & Inclusivity
I aim to create a safe, welcoming space for all clients. I have extensive experience supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD, AS and clients from LGBTQ+ communities. I am committed to understanding each person’s unique experiences, needs, and ways of communicating, and to working collaboratively to make therapy accessible and effective.
Therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve had negative experiences or felt misunderstood in the past. I work in a warm, non-judgemental, and flexible way, and I welcome open conversation about what helps you feel safe and supported. This includes practical considerations such as session structure, pace, and communication preferences.
I continually update my training and practice to ensure I remain aware of current best practice in inclusive therapy. Everyone is welcome, and you are invited to get in touch to discuss any accessibility or inclusivity needs before starting therapy.
